Hundreds of drones swarmed into formation above Mexico City this week, painting footballs, trophies and tournament emblems across the night sky as the FIFA World Cup burst into life. "Lighting up the night sky in Mexico City for the FIFA World Cup," FIFA said as it shared footage of the display.
The show was produced by Nova Sky Stories, the drone-art company behind some of the world's biggest aerial spectacles, and served as a glowing curtain-raiser for the largest World Cup ever staged.
A Historic Opening in Mexico City
The celebrations crowned an opening week in which Mexico beat South Africa in the tournament's first match at Mexico City Stadium, the arena formerly known as Estadio Azteca. The venue made history in the process, becoming the first stadium to host World Cup matches across three separate tournaments.
The opening ceremony brought a global cast to the pitch, with Shakira, Tyla and Alejandro Fernández among the performers, while Andrea Bocelli and EJAE delivered DNA, the tournament's official anthem. Burna Boy, J Balvin, Maná, Belinda, Los Ángeles Azules, Danny Ocean and Lila Downs rounded out a line-up built to match the scale of the occasion.
The Biggest World Cup Ever Played
This edition of the World Cup is the first hosted by three nations — Mexico, the United States and Canada — and the first to feature an expanded field playing 104 matches. For FIFA, the drone display was more than decoration: it set the visual tone for a tournament determined to be remembered as the biggest sporting event ever staged.
Why It Matters for UAE Football Fans
Football is the UAE's most-watched sport, and World Cup fever is already sweeping Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with fan zones, screening venues and watch parties confirmed across both cities. With match kick-offs landing in UAE evening and overnight hours, residents can follow the tournament's drama in real time — starting with a host nation that has already given its fans a night to remember, on the pitch and in the sky above it.
