NBA champion Tristan Thompson has joined Dubai Basketball as the club’s new Global Ambassador, taking on a role focused on international growth, strategic partnerships and the development of basketball culture in the UAE and beyond.

The appointment adds an established NBA name to Dubai Basketball’s growing international project as the club continues working to strengthen its position in European and global basketball.

Thompson will work alongside the club’s leadership to increase Dubai Basketball’s international visibility, engage with fans and support partnerships across different markets. His role is also connected to the club’s long-term ambition of establishing Dubai as an important destination for elite basketball.

Tristan Thompson Brings NBA Championship Experience

Thompson brings more than a decade of experience from the NBA to his new position.

The former Cleveland Cavaliers player was part of the team that won the 2016 NBA Championship, one of the most significant achievements in the franchise’s history. He also appeared in 22 NBA Finals games during his career and competed in more than 800 NBA games.

His experience at the highest level of professional basketball gives Dubai Basketball an additional connection to the global basketball community.

Thompson has also spoken positively about Dubai’s development and its growing international profile. His new role combines that connection with the club’s ambition to build a stronger basketball ecosystem in the region.

Speaking about the appointment, Thompson said Dubai has developed into a place where sport, business, culture and opportunity are growing rapidly.

He described Dubai Basketball as a project that goes beyond simply being a basketball team and said there is an opportunity to develop Dubai into a global basketball hub connecting talent, fans and opportunities across the Middle East, Europe and other markets.

Dubai Basketball Targets International Growth

Thompson’s appointment comes as Dubai Basketball continues to expand its international presence.

The club was established in 2023 and has developed rapidly since its launch. During the 2025-26 season, Dubai Basketball became the first Gulf-based team to compete in the EuroLeague, marking a major milestone for both the club and basketball in the region.

The team also won the ABA League title in its second season and has attracted more than 100,000 fans, helping create a growing audience for professional basketball in Dubai.

The club is now entering another important stage of its development, with its 2026-27 EuroLeague campaign providing another opportunity to compete against established European basketball organisations.

Dubai Basketball has continued strengthening its squad and organisation ahead of the new season. The club recently announced the signing of Tornike Shengelia from FC Barcelona, while also confirming its coaching staff for the 2026-27 campaign.

Building a Stronger Basketball Culture

Beyond competition, Dubai Basketball is seeking to develop a broader basketball culture around the club.

The organisation has identified fan engagement, media visibility and strategic partnerships as important parts of its international development strategy. Thompson’s new position fits into that wider approach by giving the club a recognised NBA figure who can help connect Dubai Basketball with audiences and opportunities outside the region.

His international profile could also support the club’s efforts to attract greater attention from players, fans and commercial partners.

For Dubai, the project forms part of a broader expansion of the emirate’s sports ecosystem. The city has increasingly positioned itself as a destination for international sporting events and organisations, while basketball has become an increasingly visible part of that landscape.

Dubai Basketball’s participation in the EuroLeague has given the emirate a regular presence on one of European basketball’s biggest stages.

Thompson to Support the Club’s Next Chapter

As Global Ambassador, Thompson is expected to support Dubai Basketball’s international development while helping strengthen its connections with the wider basketball community.

The role will include supporting strategic partnerships and fan engagement while contributing to the club’s efforts to promote basketball in the UAE and internationally.

For Thompson, the appointment marks a new chapter following his playing career and allows him to remain involved with professional basketball through a project focused on international expansion.

For Dubai Basketball, bringing an NBA champion into its front office adds another layer of international recognition as the club continues developing its identity.

The organisation’s ambitions now extend beyond establishing itself as a successful team. It wants to create a platform capable of connecting international basketball talent with Dubai, attracting new audiences and helping the emirate become a recognised destination for elite basketball.

With Thompson joining its leadership structure as Global Ambassador, Dubai Basketball is continuing its push to turn that vision into a long-term international project.
