As the Philippines marks Independence Day today, one of the most striking tributes did not come from a parade ground — it came off the coast of Dubai, where content creator Karolina Agata Sankiewicz wakesurfed across open water in heels, a Filipiniana-inspired ensemble, and the Philippine flag held high above her head.
A Tribute Built on the Water
Known online as Dubai's "Barbie surfer," Sankiewicz performed the ride in a cream blouse with butterfly-style sleeves, a flowing royal blue skirt and red heels — the colours of the flag she carried. An instrumental version of the Philippine national anthem played as she crossed the water, raising the flag at the heart of the run.
"Happy Philippines Independence Day," she wrote alongside the video, honoring what she called a nation built on courage, resilience and hope. "May the strength of the Filipino people shine through every challenge. Stay strong, Philippines."
Tens of Millions of Views
The tribute is the latest in a series of Filipino-themed rides that have collectively drawn more than 75 million views across social platforms — earlier runs featured Filipino treats, from fried chicken to ube cake, balanced mid-ride. The latest video also carried a sombre note, with prayers offered for families affected by a recent earthquake in the Philippines.
Why She Rides for the Philippines
Sankiewicz has been open about the inspiration behind the series: her own team includes members from the Philippines, and the tributes are her way of honoring their culture and the wider Filipino community that powers daily life across the Emirates. Filipinos make up one of the UAE's largest expatriate communities, and Philippine Independence Day is celebrated across Dubai and Abu Dhabi with cultural events, performances and community gatherings.
Her stunt-heavy style — wakesurfing in heels while multitasking — has built her a global audience, but the Independence Day series has become something more personal: a recurring love letter to a community far from home, delivered at full speed across Dubai's waters.
