Zayed National Museum is a finalist for a 2026 architecture award. The Abu Dhabi venue is shortlisted in the Completed Buildings – Culture category at the World Architecture Festival, joining 18 other projects from around the world. The festival recognises outstanding architectural achievements globally and will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from Nov. 18 to 20. During the live judging process, finalists present their projects to a panel of internationally renowned architects and industry experts. The shortlist places the museum among a select group of completed cultural projects recognised for design excellence.
Located on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, at the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum opened its doors in December 2025. It records the history of the United Arab Emirates, from the earliest evidence of human habitation to the civilizations that shaped its culture and identity, rooted in the vision and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al‑Nahyan. Designed by Foster + Partners and led by Pritzker Prize‑winning architect Norman Foster, the building’s distinctive architecture is inspired by falconry. Five lightweight steel towers act as thermal chimneys, drawing hot air upwards and supporting a natural ventilation strategy, while glazed surfaces channel daylight into the galleries below. Each tower can be individually adjusted to optimise environmental performance. The tower design not only supports ventilation but also creates a visual rhythm that echoes the flight of falcons across the sky. The galleries sit beneath a landscaped mound that reflects the UAE’s natural terrain, and at the heart of the museum is Al‑Liwan, a bright central atrium that hosts cultural events such as performances, talks, traditional dance and poetry.
The museum’s inclusion in the festival highlights the UAE’s commitment to cultural preservation and architectural excellence. The Completed Buildings – Culture category honours finished cultural venues, including museums, galleries, libraries, theatres, concert halls and cinemas, and only projects completed between Jan. 1 2025 and June 1 2026 qualify. Being shortlisted signals international recognition of the museum’s design, its sustainable features, and its role in showcasing the nation’s heritage to a global audience. The museum’s inclusion underscores the UAE’s growing presence on the global architectural stage and its investment in cultural infrastructure.
