Last Friday brought a surprise to the UAE’s eastern coast. Light to moderate rain swept across the Hajar Mountains, catching residents in Fujairah and Khor Fakkan off guard. The showers turned the region into a misty, cooler escape from the typical July heat.
The National Centre of Meteorology had predicted generally clear skies, making the rainfall a welcome twist. This phenomenon comes from Al Marawih convective clouds, which form when moist air from the Sea of Oman rises up the mountains. These towering clouds brought thundery showers to the area, creating scenes that felt more like autumn than midsummer. Winds remained light to moderate, occasionally picking up to fresh, while seas in the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman stayed slight.
Plan Your Misty East Coast Escape
The cooler weather opens up several options for a weekend drive. Wadi Wurayah National Park in Fujairah is a top pick right now. The protected reserve usually features dry landscapes, but recent rain means its waterfalls and freshwater pools are flowing. It is an ideal time to see the rare wildlife there without the swelter. For those who prefer a scenic route, the drive toward Jebel Jais viewpoints via the Khor Fakkan road offers misty mountain views. While the peak itself is in Ras Al Khaimah, the connecting roads provide similar atmospheric scenery without the usual heat haze.
History buffs can stop by Al Bidyah Mosque near Khor Fakkan. As the UAE’s oldest known mosque, it looks particularly striking under overcast, misty skies. It is a quick, quiet stop that adds character to a coastal road trip. If you prefer the water, snorkeling or diving off Khor Fakkan is a solid choice. The coastline is known for decent visibility and calmer waters, and the cooler air makes the walk back from the beach much more comfortable. Finally, a stroll along the Fujairah Corniche is now genuinely pleasant. With the heat dialed down, you can actually enjoy the walk rather than rushing between air-conditioned spots.
