Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) inaugurated a central control room yesterday to manage and monitor autonomous vehicle operations across the emirate. This launch supports the ongoing rollout of self-driving transport services and aims to enhance direct supervision of the sector.
Advanced Monitoring Systems
The facility is equipped with a centralised supervision system and the Autonomous Vehicle Integration and Testing Operations Management System, known as AViTOMS. This technology enables real-time tracking of vehicle locations, speeds, and routes. Additionally, it records and analyses trips, coordinates emergency responses with relevant authorities, and generates operational reports. The platform also manages permit issuance and the approval of operational routes for licensed autonomous vehicle operators.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the ITC, emphasized the importance of this development. He noted that the facility responds to the rapid adoption of smart mobility technologies. “The inauguration of the central control room represents a key milestone in the development of the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi. It responds to the rapid adoption of smart mobility technologies, which require an advanced supervisory system to ensure real-time monitoring and efficient risk management.”
AlGhfeli further explained that the control room establishes an integrated approach combining technical capabilities and regulatory frameworks. This enhances the emirate’s readiness to operate autonomous vehicles within a safe and organised environment that builds trust and road safety.
The ITC confirmed the control room will operate during approved hours, enabling rapid monitoring of autonomous vehicle operations and immediate response to operational or emergency situations in line with regulatory procedures.
Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector, noted the broader impact of the initiative. He remarked that the Centre’s initiatives reflect a significant shift toward an integrated digital services model that strengthens Abu Dhabi’s leadership in the smart
