Opening date and location
The Department of Culture and Tourism‑Abu Dhabi announced the opening date, confirming that the museum will welcome the public later this year. The announcement comes more than two decades after the project was first unveiled in 2006.
Situated on Saadiyat Island, the museum sits on a promontory a short walk from the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The island already hosts the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, creating a growing cultural precinct.
Design, size and visitor experience
Designed by the late US architect Frank Gehry, the new Guggenheim will be the largest in the network that includes sites in Venice, Bilbao and New York. Its 30 galleries span 11,600 sq m of interior gallery space and 23,000 sq m of outdoor exhibition areas.
According to the museum’s statement, "Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a museum of modern and contemporary art that connects cultures, inspires people, and celebrates art from the 1960s to the present, with a focus on West Asia, North Africa, South Asia, and the wider region." Guests will be invited to engage with art on their own terms, shaping individual pathways through galleries that explore vectors such as Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling.
