Abu Dhabi marked World Organ Donation Day with a transplant milestone. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi announced that more than 2,100 patients have benefited from organ transplants performed in the emirate since the Hayat programme began in 2017. The figure reflects the cumulative impact of a national effort to encourage organ donation and to provide specialised care for recipients.
Hayat programme milestones and growth
At the core of the programme is the Centre of Excellence for Adult Multi‑Organ Transplants at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, designated by the Department of Health. As the UAE’s first multi‑organ transplant centre, it runs the country’s only heart and lung transplant programme and operates a dedicated transplant intensive care unit. The centre performed a robotic lung transplant, marking the first such procedure in the UAE. It has also achieved the nation’s inaugural combined heart and double‑lung transplant, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a hub for medical excellence.
Through continued public outreach and donor registration drives, the Hayat programme aims to sustain this momentum, offering new hope to patients and families across the emirate.
