Etihad Rail, the country’s landmark transport project, released a detailed list of items that passengers cannot bring on its trains. The list was published on 16 August 2026, following the inaugural Fujairah‑Abu Dhabi route that was flagged off on 30 June. As more stations are set to open, travellers need to know what is allowed and what is not.
Prohibited items on board
The railway bans several categories of hazardous and disruptive goods. Explosive materials, including fireworks and ammunition, are strictly forbidden. Flammable and hazardous substances such as gasoline, paint thinners, compressed gases, pressurised gas cylinders and aerosol canisters also cannot be carried. Weapons – firearms, knives and other arms – are prohibited unless held by authorised personnel like law‑enforcement officers.
Other bans cover illegal drugs, chemical and biological hazards, and large or disruptive items that could block aisles or exits. This includes oversized luggage, boxes, musical instruments and sports gear such as surfboards, paddles, skis, snowboards and golf clubs. Unsecured items like plants, trade goods that appear to need professional transport, and any goods prohibited by customs authorities are also disallowed.
Restricted items and allowances
While many items are outright banned, the railway allows certain items under specific conditions. Passengers may bring up to two pieces of luggage free of charge, regardless of ticket type. Wheelchairs are permitted if a space is reserved at booking, but only electric wheelchairs with manufacturer‑installed batteries are accepted.
Domestic pets, including dogs and falcons, may travel in an approved carrier that does not exceed 55 cm × 40 cm × 23 cm. Strollers and baby‑related equipment are also subject to restrictions, though the exact limits were not detailed in the release. Alcoholic beverages, smoking devices such as e‑cigarettes, and any items that could cause strong odours or distress to fellow passengers are prohibited.
Etihad Rail’s passenger rules aim to keep journeys safe and comfortable as the network expands beyond the Fujairah‑Abu Dhabi line. With more stations slated to open, the clear guidelines help residents plan a smooth weekend trip on the scenic train service.
